Janvier Community & OSLI Companies Support Haiti Relief Efforts

Students at Father R. Perrin School in the Janvier/Chard communities in Northern Alberta rallied friends, family and industry to raise funds in support of Haiti earthquake relief efforts after the devastating earthquake struck near Haiti capital, Port au Prince, on January 12, 2010.

The 300-person community, and home to the Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation and the Chard Métis, pooled their resources to raise $1,824 for the cause. They then issued a challenge to the five founding members of the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative (OSLI) external link: new window—Total E&P Canada, ConocoPhillips Canada, Suncor, StatoilHydro and Nexen—to match the money they raised.

OSLI has launched a 3-year pilot project in the Janvier First Nation community to establish the school as a hub in the community, and are working with the children and youth to develop academic and leadership skills.

With funds augmented by all five OSLI companies, on March 25, the student body presented a cheque of $14,600 for Haitian relief efforts to a representative of the Canadian Red Cross who attended a ceremony at the school. It was a proud day for the community, as the children of Janvier/Chard established themselves as global citizens.

Total SA donated €1,000,000 to the French Red Cross in support of Haiti relief efforts and launched some internal initiatives to help Total employees and their families living in the area. Total E&P Canada and its employees also raised $6,400 for Haiti relief efforts through our Employee Gift Matching Program.
