Arbor Day
Growing Environmentally-Responsible Attitudes in Strathcona County
On May 8, 2009, more than 1,000 grade 1 students from schools throughout Strathcona County converged on Broadmoor Lake Park in Sherwood Park. They were there to celebrate Arbor Day, an international celebration and education initiative that encourages first grade students to learn about tree planting and environmental care.
Total E&P Canada is committed to sustainability and is proud to take part in a local initiative that develops an environmentally responsible attitude in children.
Larry Wall, Manager, Community Engagement, Strathcona County & Greater Edmonton
Total E&P Canada was the presenting sponsor of this event which saw 1,000 seedlings distributed to local 6-year-olds. The children and their parents plant their seedlings at home, and care for their tree as it grows in the community. The students also participated in a series of learning activities about trees and the environment.
Total’s sponsorship of Arbor Day also included an education initiative for grade 4 students: the annual Talking Forest Children’s Tree Conference. Three grade 4 classes in Strathcona County are selected each year to participate in the interactive conference, where they learn about the forest ecosystem as well as outdoor living skills to help respect and preserve nature.
Total was proud to share its commitment to the environment with these energetic students who represent the future mindset for environmental responsibility in Alberta.
