Although a relative newcomer in the oilsands development, Total E&P Canada has put in place the structures necessary to work closely with local communities, stakeholder groups and international organizations, to establish a working dialogue for current and future projects.
Total E&P Canada continues to develop strong relationships with stakeholders interested in its resource development plans. A crucial element of our success is our relationships with our neighbours and we are committed to open and extensive communication with stakeholders.
Total E&P Canada’s operations in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta are near several First Nations communities. As part of our Joslyn lease development plan, the company implemented a comprehensive consultation strategy to engage and partner with local First Nations Communities. Meetings with individual stakeholders will continue to be held along with public forums throughout all phases of our development plans.
Total has also worked closely with local communities to identify opportunities for local businesses and employment, as we believe that our activities bring direct benefits to these communities.
In the case of Surmont, Total and the operator of the site, ConcoPhillips, are working with local professional associations in order to maximize local content and support the local economy. Professional training programs and involvement in local schools are crucial to develop the skills that the industry needs and to provide more employment opportunities for local residents.
Total E&P Canada continues to focus on building positive relationships in the communities where we operate, to address concerns and interests about our development plans and to ensure these issues are understood.
As the Company’s business activities grow in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Total E&P Canada will become more visible and will increasingly participate in numerous multi-stakeholder processes. We believe the local communities in which we operate should experience the social and economic benefits of the oilsands development. |
