Funding

Total Canada's Community Investment Program supports registered charities and not-for-profit societies whose services are provided in locations in which we operate or which have a connection to our multinational operations.

To apply for funding:

  1. Review our "community investment pillars" to see if your request fits with our focus of investments.
  2. Review which groups are not eligible for funding.
  3. If your request meets the funding criteria, apply online.

Funding Requests Considered

Not all funding requests are eligible for funding consideration. Total Canada consideres requests that 'fit' with our focus areas (pillars) and that meet specific criteria.

1. Focus of Investments

Total supports commitments which fit into one or more of our Community Investment Pillars (click links below for more details):

Education

  • capacity-building: increasing programs and availability within the community
  • improving educational opportunities and services within the context for youth and post-secondary students
  • providing scholarships and bursaries to deserving students in universities and the trades
  • playing a role in educating young people about the energy business, and dialoguing with them about the related issues that affect them
  • leveraging recruiting opportunities

Cultural Heritage

  • projects aimed at francophone communities, reflecting Total’s French roots
  • bilingualism, multiculturalism and international outreach, reflecting Total’s international scope
  • Aboriginal customs
  • the arts
  • history preservation

Community Support

  • based on geography
  • programs that address social issues within communities
  • capacity-building and sustainable development initiatives to create livable communities, including:
    • the environment – particularly air, land, water and forests
    • infrastructure
    • meeting places
    • health
    • wellness & recreation

2. Funding Criteria

Funding requests that fit within the three investment pillars are then tested against the following criteria:

  • Does the sponsorship take place in a community where we operate?
  • How many employees are in the community where funding is being requested?
  • What is the strength of the proposal evaluated against the three pillars (i.e. does it fit with one, two or all three pillars of investment)?
  • What is the financial management and health of the organisation? Does the organization provide a published list of directors and officers and provide current financial statements on request?
  • Is there assurance that services or activities are provided without regard to race, religion, creed, gender or sexual orientation?
  • How many people in the community will likely benefit from the proposed project or program?
  • What is the demonstrable social (direct and indirect) impact of the investment?

Funding Requests Not Considered

The following funding requests and organisations are not eligible for consideration:

  • advocacy groups or lobbying organisations
  • appliances and hardware
  • events or activities in communities taking place outside our operating locations
  • for-profit organizations
  • initiatives that benefit only one or a few people
  • organizations that benefit from United Way funding, which Total E&P Canada already supports
  • political fundraisers, political parties and their elected representatives
  • private clubs supported through membership fees
  • programs of a religious nature
  • programs or services not related to our pillars of investment
  • projects or events that have already taken place
  • school sports teams beyond support through our employee matching program
  • service clubs and fraternal organisations
  • trips, tours, conferences, congresses, seminars, workshops and related travelling expenses unless associated with educational initiatives
