Surmont Asset

Overview

Total E&P Canada has a 50% interest in the Surmont Asset, located approximately 60 kilometres southeast of the city of Fort McMurray. The Asset covers an area of 567 square kilometres and Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology is used to extract the bitumen from the oil sands.

Status: Surmont Project

Surmont is being developed through a multi-phased approach. Phase 1 has a design capacity of 27,000 barrels of bitumen per day with a design steam-oil ratio of 2.25. It entered into commercial production in the 4th quarter of 2007.

Surmont Phase 2 development is expected to take the total bitumen production to approximately 136,000 barrels of bitumen per day. Phase 2 was sanctioned in January 2010 by the partners, with production start-up currently scheduled for 2015 (refer to the press release for further details). Phase 2 is currently under development.

Total's evaluations indicate that the Surmont Asset has a phased, full field development potential of over 200,000 barrels of bitumen per day for more than 30 years. Future phases are currently under consideration.
